Macbeth: The Graphic Novel (American English, Quick Text Edition)

Macbeth: The Graphic Novel (American English, Quick Text Edition) Review

Gold Star Award Winner!

Shakespeare's MACBETH has been magically transformed into a highly engaging graphic novel produced by Classical Comics.

The quick text edition offers a simplified version of the Scottish tale by using as few words as possible on the page. The lack of Shakespearean dialogue does not deter from the original tale; in fact, it enhances the play.

Students who struggle with Shakespeare's language will be relieved to see this edition. They can read the original MACBETH while using the graphic novel as a supplemental tool. Teachers may wish to use these novels as a refresher before diving into a unit on Shakespeare.

The artistry in this graphic novel is also amazing! The characters are drawn well with nice, clean lines. The panels are extremely colorful, making the pictures appear to jump off the page.

The Dramatis Personae page provides thumbnail drawings for each character, which will help readers identify the players. The Contents Page breaks the story down into acts and scenes, thereby allowing readers to find specific parts within the play.

I am very impressed with the work Classical Comics is producing. As a teacher, I know how difficult it is to get students to read Shakespeare. These novels will make my job much easier in the future!

Macbeth: The Graphic Novel (American English, Quick Text Edition) Overview

Witches, murder, ghosts, and madness — one of Shakespeare’s finest tragedies is also a perfect fit for the graphic novel format. This compelling adaptation depicts every blood-curdling scene in easy-to-follow illustrations, accompanied by Shakespeare’s original text. An illustrated cast of characters reminds readers who’s who, and fascinating background information on Shakespeare and the real Macbeth adds historical context.

Graphic Novels and Comics in Libraries and Archives: Essays on Readers, Research, History and Cataloging Review

Graphic Novels and Comics in Libraries and Archives: Essays on Readers, Research, History and Cataloging Overview

To say that graphic novels, comics, and other forms of sequential art have become a major part of popular culture and academia would be a vast understatement. Now an established component of library and archive collections across the globe, graphic novels are proving to be one of the last vestiges of the printed form actually gaining in popularity. Full of practical advice and innovative ideas for librarians, educators, and archivists, this book provides a wide-reaching look at how graphic novels and comics can be used to their full advantage in educational settings. Topics include: the historically tenuous relationship between comics and librarians; the aesthetic value of sequential art; the use of graphic novels in library outreach services; graphic novel collection evaluations for both American and Canadian libraries; tips and tricks for cataloging comics; and the swiftly growing realm of webcomics.

Courtney Crumrin, Vol. 2: Courtney Crumrin & The Coven of Mystics (Courtney Crumrin (Graphic Novels))

Courtney Crumrin, Vol. 2: Courtney Crumrin & The Coven of Mystics (Courtney Crumrin (Graphic Novels)) Review

Like Harry Potter, these are books which target children ages 7 and higher, however, the material and subject matter is sophisticated enough to entertain adults. Im one such fan of Ted Naifeh, who's writing and art are at his best in this series about a young girl with gifted powers. Think of Courtney Crumrin as Wednesday from the Addam's Family except with magical powers. Both are curmudgeon's and yet adorable; kids who grow up too fast or who have old souls. Her adventures are typical for a girl of her age except they involve very real monsters and very deadly situations. If you like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter you'll love this graphic novel series (yes, they are graphic novels or comics). I am now a fan of Mr. Naifeh and young Ms. Crumrin.

Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection (Fulcrum Press)

Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection (Fulcrum Press) Review

Folkloric stories are powerful. They can be emotional, funny, uplifting, or scary. But they always have pull to them, and that's why they continue to haunt and entertain people.

While there are special classes in school that teach mythology and folklore, it isn't always easy to find a class on Native American stories. Unfortunately, these stories are often pushed aside just as Native American culture and history can so often get left out of textbooks. Trickster: Native American Tales--A Graphic Collection is a unique remedy for this. In the form of a comic book, it tells 21 Native tales about tricksters. The tales range in style and emotion: Some are straightforward, some are humorous, some are frightening. All of them are interesting.

While the collection is edited by Matt Dembicki, who also illustrated one of the stories, Trickster offers a wide variety of talent. Dembicki explains in his afterword: "For this book, I wanted the stories to be authentic, meaning they would be written by Native American storytellers." He was able to find many talented people to help him make this collection a reality. One aspect that's really interesting is how different the stories are from one another. Even if elements and storylines can be similar, each artist and writer has a unique way of portraying the story. The style of art especially varies: Some stories are dark and realistic; some are comical and outrageous; some look as if they came from the Sunday morning funnies section; some look like the art from children's books; some look like cartoons one might see on television.

The binding thread for all the stories is that each one deals with a trickster. Sometimes the tricksters are animals like Coyote or Rabbit. Other times they're humans. Sometimes the tricksters are really low-down; at other times, their actions are understandable. Usually their brains help them win the day, even if their methods wouldn't always be considered acceptable.

This could be a great way to learn more about Native American culture through storytelling. Or, if the reader is already familiar with the stories, it could be enjoyable just for the sake of seeing how different writers and artists render the stories. Either way, it's a very lively and readable book that libraries might really want to consider shelving in their folklore sections.

It seems like neglect not to mention the names of all the gifted people who wrote and illustrated these stories; Naming them will also give readers an idea of how many minds worked on this and how many creative differences can be seen. Trickster's contributors are Dayton Edmonds, Micah Farritor, John Active, Jason Copland, James Bruchac, Joseph Bruchac, Matt Dembicki, David Smith, Jerry Carr, Eldrena Douma, Roy Boney, Jr., Michael Thompson, Jacob Warrenfeltz, Jonathan Perry, Chris Piers, Scott White, Tim Tingle, Pat Lew, Elaine Grinnell, Michelle Silva, Mary Eyley, Jim8ball, Greg Rodgers, Mike Short, Joyce Bear, Megan Baehr, Beckee Garris, Andrew Cohen, Dan Jones, Michael J. Auger, Eirik Thorsgard, Rand Arrington, Thomas C. Cummings, Jr., Paul Zdepski, Jimm Goodtracks, Dimi Macheras, Jack Gladstone, Evan Keeling, Joseph Stands With Many, Jon Sperry, John Bear Mitchell, Andy Bennett, Sunny Dooley, and J. Chris Campbell.

Trickster: Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection (Fulcrum Press) Overview

All cultures have tales of the trickster—a crafty creature or being who uses cunning to get food, steal precious possessions, or simply cause mischief. He disrupts the order of things, often humiliating others and sometimes himself. In Native American traditions, the trickster takes many forms, from coyote or rabbit to raccoon or raven. The first graphic anthology of Native American trickster tales, Trickster brings together Native American folklore and the world of comics.

In Trickster more than twenty Native American tales are cleverly adapted into comic form. Each story is written by a different Native American storyteller who worked closely with a selected illustrator, a combination that gives each tale a unique and powerful voice and look. Ranging from serious and dramatic to funny and sometimes downright fiendish, these tales bring tricksters back into popular culture in a very vivid form. From an ego-driven social misstep in “Coyote and the Pebbles” to the hijinks of “How Wildcat Caught a Turkey” and the hilarity of “Rabbit’s Choctaw Tail Tale,” Trickster provides entertainment for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

Along with compiling and editing the book, artist Matt Dembicki illustrated one of the featured trickster tales. Dembicki is the founder of D.C. Conspiracy, a comic creators’ collaborative in Washington, DC, and has won acclaim for his nature graphic novel, Mr. Big. He currently works as an editor for a higher-education association.

Introducing Nietzsche: A Graphic Guide (Introducing (Graphic Guides))

Introducing Nietzsche: A Graphic Guide (Introducing (Graphic Guides)) Review

This book is a perfect introduction/overview of Nietzcshe's work, well paced, covering all the bases simply and succinctly, with suitable illustrations. Best of all, Nietzsche himself gives intellectual justification for such a brief overview of complicated ideas - he is perhaps the greatest critic of all, of academic overwrite and turgid over-complicated arguments. As a great proponent and utiliser of the aphorism, you can feel quite comfortable in reading this edition, that you are in fact doing the great man's work justice.

We see in Gane's book what a profound thinker Nietzsche is, and what a thoroughly modern figure he is. We see how Freud, Postmodernism and the current critique of science as God all developed from his work. What a man, what a thinker, what a book this is! Junk the original works and just read this - now that's a post-modern approach.

Introducing Nietzsche: A Graphic Guide (Introducing (Graphic Guides)) Overview

Why must we believe that God is dead? Can we accept that traditional morality is just a 'useful mistake'? Did the principle of 'the will to power' lead to the Holocaust? What are the limitations of scientific knowledge? Is human evolution complete or only beginning? It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Friedrich Nietzsche for our present epoch. His extraordinary insights into human psychology, morality, religion and power seem quite clairvoyant today: existentialism, psychoanalysis, semiotics and postmodernism are plainly anticipated in his writings - which are famously enigmatic and often contradictory."Introducing Nietzsche" is the perfect guide to this exhilarating and oft-misunderstood philosopher.

The 101 Best Graphic Novels

The 101 Best Graphic Novels Review

As an educator trying to get a handle on graphic novels and comics in literacy education, this was an excellent starting point (along with Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art). The selections, descriptions, and rating were helpful and accurate. It's been an excellent guide.

The entries are listed alphabetical by author, and I only wish that there were alternate indexes (by ratings or subject). However, it did force me to expand my initial interests...not a stress for a brief book.

I would strongly recommend this for any reader, teacher, librarian, teacher educator, or parent with an interest in comics or graphic novels--it can introduce you to a variety of titles or expand your existing readings.
